Yohan, a vibrant 14-year-old Torres Strait Islander from Thursday Island, embodies the power of overcoming challenges. Living with spina bifida and using a wheelchair, Yohan previously faced difficulties accessing his world – his home, school, and the heart of his community – due to many buildings being built on stilts.
NDIS: Building Bridges for Independence
Thanks to funding from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Yohan was able to work with local disability provider Oyster Care to secure the equipment and support he craved. Now, a lift installed at his home and an accessible lift and toilet at his school have transformed his daily routine, making everything much easier and safer for Yohan.
A Ripple Effect of Positivity
The positive impact extends far beyond Yohan himself. Kath, his dedicated support worker, has witnessed a remarkable growth in his confidence and social interaction. Yohan can now actively participate in all aspects of community life – friendships, events, and cherished activities like football games, dance practice, and cultural celebrations. His infectious enthusiasm lights up every space he enters. He even had the incredible honor of leading the State of Origin march a few years ago!
From Participant to Contributor
Yohan doesn’t just take; he gives back. The support he has received has empowered him to become an advocate for accessibility and inclusion within his community. He even launched a microenterprise business crafting and selling Thothas, a traditional spear-fishing tool. This venture not only nurtures his entrepreneurial spirit but also plays a vital role in preserving important cultural practices.
