Our Frequently Asked Questions

Oyster Care is committed to providing exceptional support and assistance to individuals with disabilities, empowering them to lead fulfilling and independent lives. Our comprehensive range of services includes Support Employment.
What is Supported Employment?

Supported Employment is designed to help people with disability find and maintain paid employment in the open labour market. It’s about providing individualised support to help you achieve your employment goals, whether you’re looking for your first job or returning to the workforce.

Supported Employment takes a personalised approach. It typically involves:

  • Job Development: Identifying your skills, interests, and employment goals, and then finding suitable job opportunities in the open labour market.
  • Job Coaching: Providing on-the-job training and support to help you learn the required skills and tasks, and adjust to the work environment.
  • Ongoing Support: Offering ongoing support as needed, which may include regular check-ins, assistance with problem-solving, and advocacy with your employer.
  • Career Development: Helping you explore career pathways, develop new skills, and advance in your chosen field.

To be eligible for Supported Employment through the NDIS, you must:

  • Have an NDIS plan with funding allocated for Supported Employment.
  • Have a disability that impacts your ability to secure and maintain employment without support.
  • Be motivated to work and have employment as a goal.

The types of jobs available through Supported Employment are diverse and depend on your individual skills, interests, and goals. They can include:

  • Retail and customer service
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Administration and office work
  • Horticulture and gardening
  • Cleaning and maintenance
  • Trades and labour
  • Technology and IT
  • And many other fields!
How do I find a Supported Employment provider?

You can find Supported Employment providers through the NDIS Provider Directory or by contacting your local area coordinator. It’s important to choose a provider with experience in supporting people with similar disabilities to yours and a good track record of helping people find and keep jobs.

Supported Employment is funded through your NDIS plan. You will need to discuss your employment goals with your NDIS planner and request funding for Supported Employment during your plan development or review.

While both aim to help people with disability find employment, there are some differences:

  • NDIS vs. Government Funding: Supported Employment is funded through the NDIS, while DES is funded by the Australian Government.
  • Focus: Supported Employment often focuses on finding jobs in the open labour market, while DES may also include options like supported business enterprises.
  • Individualised Support: Supported Employment emphasises individualised, ongoing support tailored to the specific needs of the individual.

The first step is to contact your NDIS planner or local area coordinator to discuss your employment goals and request funding for Supported Employment in your plan. You can also contact a Supported Employment provider directly to discuss your options and learn more about their services. They can guide you through the process and help you get started on your journey to employment.
