Lasgana & Candles: Spark Joy with Flavours & Flames Day Program

“Our mission extends beyond providing support—we strive to amplify the voices of people with disabilities, creating opportunities for meaningful engagement and advocacy.”

A Day of Discovery and Delight

There’s something heartwarming about gathering around a table, sharing stories while layering love into a dish. On May 2, 2025, we came together not just to cook, but to connect, and nothing brought us closer than the comforting, savoury layers of homemade lasagna.

Our event, “Flavours & Flames,” was a beautiful fusion of food and creativity, where we rolled up our sleeves and dove into the joy of making something with our hands and hearts. As the lasagna baked, its aroma wrapping around us like a warm hug, we painted, laughed, shared memories, and built new ones.

It wasn’t just about the perfect pasta sheet or the right mix of sauce and cheese. It was about creating something meaningful together. Through every step, we discovered more about ourselves and each other. Join us as we take you back to this unforgettable day where flavours met friendship and flames sparked inspiration.

Behind the Theme: Why "Flavours& Flames’?

Flavours & Flames was more than just a catchy name—it perfectly captured the heart of the day: creativity, independence, and life skills in action. This cooking class and candle-making class fusion was designed to ignite passion and confidence through a creative way to learn new skills. By combining cooking with handmade candles, participants enjoyed the freedom to experiment with both delicious flavours and fragrant scents, especially using soy wax in the candle-making process.

The experience was adaptable and budget-friendly, making it the perfect choice for individuals with disabilities who want to explore and learn something new in a supportive environment. Activities like this help spark joy and soothe the mind, encouraging self-expression and building life skills through fun and functional tasks.

Meet the Facilitators: Isata, Claire, and the Client Services Team

At the heart of Flavours & Flames was a team of warm, dedicated facilitators who brought energy, expertise, and empathy to the day.

Isata and the Client Services Team provided expert guidance throughout, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and supported. They fostered an atmosphere where participants could truly unleash their creativity. Claire, the care coordinator with a rich Greek culinary background, added a special touch by sharing her inspiring story and experience running a restaurant. Her passion infused the cooking class with authentic aroma and culinary experiences, transforming food preparation into a cultural connection.

Claire’s personal touch and storytelling enriched the day, reminding everyone that food and community are deeply intertwined.

Program Highlights: From Prep to Plate and Wax to Wick

1. Pride in Personal Creations

  • Participants showed genuine satisfaction in their hand-poured, one-of-a-kind candles and delicious lasagna. The pride of creating something meaningful was palpable.
  • The satisfaction of knowing they had created something special was palpable.

2. Sharing a Meal, Forming Bonds

  • Sitting down to enjoy the good food was more than a meal—it was a moment to reconnect and build friendships.
  • This shared experience created an ambiance full of laughter and warmth.

3. Joy in Learning, Celebrating Independence

  • Participants didn’t just follow instructions—they embraced the day as a chance to master new skills and celebrate independence.
  • The balance of cooking and candle making made the day fun and unique.

Cooking Up Confidence: Lasagna Making as a Life Skill

The lasagna making portion was carefully guided step-by-step, inspired by Claire’s Greek culinary heritage. Participants learned safe utensil handling, kitchen hygiene, and ingredient measurement. Baking and assembling the lasagna in groups encouraged teamwork and shared accomplishment.

The cooking class emphasised responsibility and cleanliness—skills that are not only useful in the kitchen but essential for daily living and independence.

Lighting Up Creativity: The Candle-Making Experience

In the candle-making segment, participants created handmade candles using soy wax infused with carefully selected scents to create an aromatic and soothing atmosphere. They learned the candle crafting process with safety techniques, melting away any fears about handling hot wax. Personalisation was a big part of the fun, allowing each person to craft a unique keepsake or a thoughtful gift for someone special. Candle making fostered mindfulness and calm, providing a perfect way to relax while also building confidence through tactile, sensory learning. At the end of the class, everyone got to take home their hand-poured, fragrant candle—an inspiring reminder of the day’s creativity and accomplishments.

Skills That Last a Lifetime: Lessons Beyond the Kitchen

The Flavours & Flames program was about more than just cooking and candle making—it was an opportunity to build essential life skills that empower participants in everyday life. These skills help foster independence, confidence, and social connection, supporting NDIS goals and enriching daily routines.

  • Teamwork & Collaboration: Working together to prepare lasagna and craft candles taught participants how to communicate, share tasks, and support each other. These skills are vital beyond the program, helping individuals thrive in group settings and build meaningful relationships with people who share similar interests.
  • Safe Use of Utensils & Measurement Accuracy: Learning proper knife skills and precise ingredient measurement is foundational for safe, confident cooking. These abilities also extend to real-life tasks like budgeting and managing routines, giving participants a greater sense of control and independence.
  • Responsibility with Cleanup & Following Instructions: Keeping the workspace clean and following step-by-step instructions are key habits for success, both in the kitchen and in life. Developing these routines encourages organization, safety, and self-discipline—qualities that help in daily activities and responsibilities.
  • Confidence to Explore New Hobbies & Making Classes: This program sparked excitement to try new creative hobbies, from pottery to candle making classes. Exploring these interests boosts self-esteem and provides relaxing, social opportunities that nurture mindfulness and joy.
  • Real-World Application: The skills learned go far beyond the workshop. They prepare participants for independent living, better social engagement, and new opportunities. Mastering these life skills is a meaningful step toward greater freedom, confidence, and connection in all areas of life.

The Heart of the Day: Culture, Connection & Community

Claire’s cultural insights into Greek cooking added a rich layer of meaning to the day. Her storytelling helped participants deepen their connection to the food, transforming the cooking class into a shared cultural experience. The joy of shared meals and meaningful conversations created a warm ambiance that made the day more than just a workshop, it became a celebration of connection and community. The event perfectly illustrated how culinary experiences and crafting activities bring people together, sparking romance, creating lasting memories, and nurturing bonds among people who share similar passions.
