Our Frequently Asked Questions

Oyster Care is committed to providing exceptional support and assistance to individuals with disabilities, empowering them to lead fulfilling and independent lives. Our comprehensive range of services includes Social & Community participation.

What are Social and Community Participation supports in the NDIS?

Social and Community Participation supports, often referred to as “Social and Community Access,” are designed to help NDIS participants engage in social, recreational, and community-based activities. These supports aim to increase social inclusion, build connections, and improve overall well-being. They can include a wide range of activities tailored to your individual goals and interests.

The possibilities are vast! Here are some examples:

  • Social groups and clubs: Joining a book club, sports team, or hobby group.
  • Recreational activities: Going to the movies, concerts, or sporting events.
  • Community events: Attending festivals, markets, or local gatherings.
  • Educational courses: Taking a cooking class, language lesson, or art workshop.
  • Volunteering: Contributing to your community through volunteer work.
  • Gym or fitness programs: Joining a gym, participating in yoga classes, or engaging in other fitness activities.
  • Travel and holidays: Planning and going on short trips or holidays.
  • Mentoring and peer support: Connecting with others who have similar experiences.

Eligibility for Social and Community Participation funding is determined during your NDIS plan development. The NDIA will consider your individual goals, needs, and how these supports will help you achieve your desired outcomes. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, contact your NDIS planner or local area coordinator.

Once your plan includes funding for Social and Community Participation, you have several options:

  • Self-Managed: You can manage your funding yourself and choose your own activities and providers.
  • Plan-Managed: A Plan Manager, like Oyster Care, can handle the financial aspects of your plan, including paying providers for your chosen activities.
  • NDIA-Managed: The NDIA manages your funding and pays providers directly.
Can I use my Social and Community Participation funding to pay for a support worker to accompany me to activities?

Yes, in many cases. If you require support to participate in social and community activities, your funding can be used to pay for a support worker. This support should be related to achieving your social and community participation goals.

There are several ways to find activities:

  • Local community centers: Check with your local community center for events and programs.
  • Online directories: Search online for community groups, clubs, and activities in your area.
  • NDIS providers: Many NDIS providers offer social and community participation programs.
  • Social media: Look for local groups and events on social media platforms.
  • Word of mouth: Ask friends, family, and other community members for recommendations.

The first step is to discuss your goals and interests with your NDIS planner or local area coordinator during your plan development or review. They can help you determine the appropriate level of funding and connect you with relevant providers.

Contact your NDIS planner, local area coordinator, or a registered NDIS provider like Oyster Care. We can provide information and support to help you navigate your options and make the most of your NDIS plan.
