Finding the Silver Lining: How the NDIS Helped Michael Thrive During Lockdowns

For many Australians providing unpaid care to loved ones with disabilities, lockdowns presented a unique set of challenges. Sarah Jones, a dedicated caregiver to Michael Brown, understands this all too well. Michael, 28, has non-verbal Down syndrome and relies on the support of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The NDIS: A Beacon of Opportunity

The NDIS program provides individuals like Michael with access to crucial therapies, day programs, and personal care assistance. Since joining the program, Sarah has witnessed Michael blossom and flourish.

“Michael enjoys life just like anyone else,” Sarah explains. “He thrives on new experiences and interactions, but he communicates and understands the world differently.”

Adapting to a New Reality

Knowing Michael’s social nature, Sarah initially worried about the shift to online support services during lockdowns. “It was a challenge at first,” Sarah admits. “Lockdowns impacted him significantly because he’s very social. All his therapy sessions and day programs had to move online.” However, Sarah soon discovered an unexpected benefit. “The online sessions actually worked well for Michael in a way,” she shares. “The increased one-on-one attention helped him thrive and adapt to the changes.”

Connecting Through a Screen

Even leisure activities like football practice with the Challengers League became virtual. “They’ve managed to keep him active,” Sarah explains. “There’s even been a bonus – online sessions with professional athletes! As a huge fan, meeting the players online was a real highlight for Michael.”

Tailored Support for a Brighter Future

Thanks to the NDIS, Michael is not only acquiring valuable life skills but also gaining the confidence to navigate the world around him. “Before the NDIS, Michael had very little support,” Sarah explains. “The responsibility of caring for him fell largely on my family and me. Now, with a personalised support plan, he’s actively developing his full potential.”

Celebrating Milestones: Big and Small

“Previously, grasping and holding objects was a struggle for Michael,” Sarah shares. “His limited speech also presented communication barriers, which I wanted to help him overcome.”

Sarah expresses her gratitude towards their chosen provider, “Their occupational therapist has been instrumental in helping Michael develop significant improvements in hand strength and grip.”

“His speech therapist has also been fantastic,” Sarah continues. “Michael’s communication skills have shown remarkable progress. We’ve celebrated many milestones, and learning more sign language has been a significant achievement.”

Even the smallest victories hold immense value for Sarah. “Things that may seem trivial to others are huge steps forward for Michael,” she explains. “These accomplishments contribute to a better quality of life for him, and in turn, for our entire family.”

The NDIS: A Path to Empowerment

The NDIS programs have opened doors of opportunity for Michael, and Sarah envisions a bright future for him. “Without this program, he wouldn’t be where he is today,” Sarah says with conviction. “Witnessing Michael’s progress fills me with immense love and pride every single day.”
